Marquette Farmers Market Update

The Downtown Marquette
Farmers Market
OPENS SATURDAY

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market is open for business this Saturday, May 19 from 9am-2pm. We will be open every Saturday until October 27. Find us at the Marquette Commons, 112 S. Third St.

Besides the best plants around for starting your garden, you'll find:
produce, meat, eggs, bread, sweets, gourmet popcorn, wool, honey, maple syrup, houseplants, garden items, jewelry, cards, cut flowers, herbs, art, prepared foods and more!

There will also be a food demo at 11 and 1, and a children's activity throughout the day.

We accept credit and debit cards, bridge cards, Project FRESH, Market FRESH, and starting June 2, will be part of the Double Up Food Bucks Program. Under this program people who run their Bridge Card at market will receive double their money, up to $20 extra each market day. The Double Up Food Bucks can only be spent on fresh Michigan produce, but that leaves regular Bridge Card expenditures for other food items. For more information on this and all other forms of payment at market besides cash, visit the market information booth in the center of the market.

 Hope to see you Saturday!

The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market is sponsored by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority and the City of Marquette. The Marquette Food Co-op sends these market updates to assist these entities in their support of our local food systems.

Exhibit Exploring Cable's Bay and Beaver Island Opens at NMU

LANSING – The Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center and Department of Sociology and Social Work at Northern Michigan University (NMU), opened a new exhibit on May 3 exploring Cable’s Bay and Beaver Island. The exhibition is made possible in part from a $13,659 major grant award from the Michigan Humanities Council.

“Scattered to the Winds: the Vanished Community of Cable’s Bay and Beaver Island,” tells the story of Cable’s Bay and Beaver Island stories pieced together from artifacts and historical accounts. The exhibit explores the history and mystery of Beaver Island and how everyday items discarded or lost are used to interpret the past.

Students in the NMU Department of Sociology’s Museum Studies II classes contributed to the creation, design and planning of the exhibition, which showcases artifacts and data collected during the NMU archaeology field school excavations conducted on Beaver Island in 2010-11.

Students held an excavation at Cable’s Bay, an early fishing village, in 2010. The village was briefly occupied from 1838-58 by fishermen and their families; traders, Native American women, and Mormons. This village holds stories of hardship, forced exodus and eventual failure.

Burke’s Farm, on Beaver Island, is another site students investigated during their dig. The early farmstead was occupied from 1852-56 by Mormon farmers who created the cabin and barn from timber on the property. Shortly after a forced exodus, the farmstead became owned by Irish immigrants, and later by Euro-American families.

The exhibit will be open at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, 105 Cohodas Hall at NMU, through September. In May, the Center will be open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From June through August, the Center will be open Monday through Thursday, and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the exhibit, please call the Heritage Center at (906) 227-3212 or e-mail heritage@nmu.edu.
